Vista’s shadow copy

I have just learnt of a feature in Vista that seems a fantastic idea.

It is called Shadow Copy and only available in the Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions. So far this is the only I see that I would want over the Premium edition I have.

What is it?

Have you ever accidentally overwritten an important document by making changes and then saving your work using the same file name? If so, you’ll appreciate the Previous Versions feature, also known as Shadow Copies. It retains earlier versions of data files and enables you to retrieve them from the file’s Properties dialog box.

I’m guessing this is one of them features that are only available if your on a network. I don’t really see the point of it as I’ve always found simple ways of recovering data I do this to. Apple’s upcoming ‘time machine’ is virtually an identical copy of this but with more advanced features and a far better interface.

But then mac has already got into the whole secure delete, data recovery idea. I’m really excited to play with time machine, there are a number of things I want to test out.

What’s funny is that this is a feature from Vax computers 30 years ago 🙂
